Oil on Water is a haunting novel of two people coming apart. It tells the intriguing story of Max and Anna, a young, beautiful, creative couple, living a life most people only dream of – until the day Max hears a voice underwater, that shakes his trust in the world he lives in. As Max begins to experience more and more of these strange ‘phenomena’, it leads to his emotional withdrawal from Anna and the life they have shared up until this time. The change in Max is mirrored in the unravelling of Anna, and is given a voice through her writing, which evolves over the period during which this breakdown occurs, as she goes from being a woman contented with her life, to utter hopelessness in the face of incomprehensible change.
Oil on Water is a textured, tension-filled exploration of the fundamental human experiences of love, loss, art, spirituality, mental disorder and the search for meaning, in the lives of Max and Anna – and exposes what it means to truly live with regret, up to its final climactic words.
